EditorialWe are pleased to announce the inauguration of an exciting new AGU publication: International Journal of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IJGA). This journal will provide a window on research in the rapidly developing fields of aeronomy and geomagnetism, including work in interplanetary, planetary, and solar phenomena, cosmic rays, and solar-terrestrial relationships. The journal will enhance the exchange of scientific results in these fields among researchers and students worldwide, and may be of special interest in relation to the The National Space Weather Program.Although IJGA emphasizes research performed in Russia and Eastern Europe, submissions will be solicited from around the world. If an article must be translated, authors may be asked to add new material or to clarify points that would not be clear to those unfamiliar with Russian scientific literature. In addition to the quarterly print journal, IJGA subscribers will have immediate access to full-text articles and abstracts electronically via the World Wide Web through the IJGA Main Site http://www.agu.org/journals/ijga/ and IJGA Mirror Site http://elpub.wdcb.ru/journals/ijga/. IJGA includes only those articles which AGU deems are of interest to the international scientific community. All articles published are reviewed according to the rigorous standards applied to international scientific journals. The journal contains both articles that have been submitted solely to IJGA for publication as well as selected articles previously published in Russian language journals. Translated articles undergo a second editorial review process to help make them more accessible to the worldwide scientific community. The current U.S. Editorial Advisor for IJGA is Professor Roger W. Smith of the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska, where he is a member of the Space Physics Group. Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. from the University of Exeter, England, in 1967. He taught at Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland from 1968-71; and at Ulster Polytechnic, Ulster, from 1971-84. In 1984, Dr. Smith joined the staff of the Geophysical Institute as a professor of physics with expertise in atmospheric dynamics and the aurora, including extreme ultraviolet observations of the earth's atmosphere. Professor Robert G. Roper, of the Georgia Institute of Technology, was the U.S. Advisor from the inception of the journal until October 1997. Dr. Roper was previously a member of the AGU Translations Board and has devoted many valuable hours to promote the dissemination of scientific articles by Russian authors. The editorial board remains committed to working with the U.S. editorial advisor and AGU to produce a publication useful to the international geophysical science community. Welcome to our first issue.
